group 2/3 Math

This week we are working with finding fractions of whole numbers and finding percentages of given sets of numbers.

Last week we were working with the equation:

number x 100
total

to work out a percentage, and this came in handy again today.  We were also finding a fraction of a set, where the knowledge we were working with in converting between fractions and percentages was also very useful!

Pre-spring Clean!

Hey guys! Remember we are having the spring clean tomorrow beginning at 9:00.We have bags and gloves here already.A reminder to parents if you would like to tag along then feel free to join us! We will be working between the school and the domain area (Down past the gravel pit and through the underpass area etc).Even if you have some non-uniform shoes like trainers or workboots those would be better to wear than canvas or leather school shoes as we will be getting in amongst it.

See you there!

Explanation writing

In writing today we began looking again at explanation writing.  Through the different groups we looked at the hallmarks of a good explanation.  White group discussed why we would write with the purpose of explaining, and then went to research examples of explanations, looking at what we could find in different examples.

Green and pink groups looked at some models of explanations from the PM exemplar books, the first, 'How paper is recycled' is a level 3 example, while 'How drought affects living things' is an example at level 4.  Pink group worked at identifying the key features of an explanation text, while Green group used a double bubble map to compare and contrast the two examples, thinking about what would be present in our writing to show it was a level four piece of work.

Next week we will begin writing our own explanations, so we are thinking now about topics we would be interested in writing about.

Room 11 Math

In math today we were working with finding unknown numbers.  The x is anything that we don't know.  For this problem we know that we have to find out what x is.
5248 + X = 7020 is the same as saying 5248 + ? = 7020

You can see that we learnt to solve it using tidy number, adding to round up to tidy numbers.

group 1 math

Today in maths we were learning to solve subtraction problems using tidy numbers.  First we thought about the new strategies we had used this term that might help.  These were subtracting using place value and adding using tidy numbers.

When we add using tidy numbers, we add on one side and take away on the other side of the equals.  This is different when we subtract using tidy numbers.  When we subtract using tidy numbers we add on one side and add on the other side of the equals.

When solving a problem like 453- 289=?

First I would add 11 to 289, to make it into 300.
453 - 300 = 153
Now I need to add back on the 11 extra that I took off
153 + 11 = 164
Therefore, 453-289 = 164

Highlanders reading group

Today the highlanders read 'A safe home for snails'.  We are working on our learning goal of reading for information and researching for information.  Before we read the story we were asked to research two things - predators for snails and what snails like to eat.  When we had found those things, we arranged our ideas into a tree map.

Using the information we had found, we read the article about making a safe home for flax snails.  Using what we had collected prior to reading and the information contained in the text, we are now going to design a safe home for a snail to meet their needs for food and protection from predators.
