group 1 math

Today in math we have been learning to subtract problems using place value partitioning.  We can use this strategy to solve subtraction problems bigger then 10.  To use this strategy, we break the number that we are taking away into its parts.

For example

916 - 408 = ?

916 - 4 / 0 / 8 = ?

916 - 400 = 516
    516 - 8 = 508
therefore
916-408 = 508

We need to remember to split the number we are taking away, not the total we start with.

Problems we could practice with:
386 - 212 = ?
65 - 34 = ?
576 - 42 = ?
